CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Ava looked up and saw the three men standing on the bridge.

One of them holding a gun.

She stroked Doug.

Tried to get him to stop barking.

But he wouldn’t.

Nothing was stopping him.

And it didn’t matter even if he did stop barking now.

Because these men had seen him.

And they didn’t look like nice men.

She looked up at them. The moon was really bright behind them, so she couldn’t see their faces properly. She wanted the moon to help her. The moon was always there for her. It always listened to her. But tonight, she needed it more than ever, and she didn’t think it was going to be able to help her.

She didn’t think anything was going to be able to help her.

Her ears were still ringing a bit. Ringing really loud. Like alarms were going off all around her, and bells ringing. Doug was still barking. But he didn’t sound as angry now. He sounded scared, now.

Scared, after the bang that the gun made.

She stood in the water and she felt cold. She needed to run away. Or she needed to hide under the water and hold her breath and disappear like a mermaid, like in that film she loved, one of her favourites. But she preferred the cartoon version, which Mum said was around when she was a kid, which must have been ages ago because Mum and Dad were really old.

And then, through the ringing in her ears, Ava heard one of the men speak.

“Hello, princess,” one of the men said. But he didn’t say it in a way that made Ava feel like she was safe. He said it in a way that made Ava feel like she was even less safe now.

And it made her want to get away even more.

It made her want to disappear even more.

“We didn’t mean to make you jump, sugar,” the same man said. “We were just fuckin’ about, you know?”

She looked up at these men, who looked over the bridge.

Down into the water at her.

“We can help you—”

“Don’t be a prick, Ian.”

“Fuck off,” the man—Ian, he must be called—said. “Come up here, little one. We can look after you.”

“If you even dare,” his friend said again.

Ian sounded mad. “I told you. Fuck off.”

He looked back down at Ava then.

He had long, grey hair.

Long and curly.

And he had this big smile on his face.

But even though he was smiling, Ava could see he had a lot of teeth missing.

He held onto the gun.

Looked down at her.

“Come up, out of that water,” he said. “You’ll be freezing down there.”

Ava looked down at Doug. He was growling. Showing his teeth. There was still a bit of blood on them, where he’d bitten Raj.

Right before Raj went… weird.

She looked at Doug and she thought maybe he could help her. Maybe he could protect her. Maybe she would be safe with him. Because he was strong. Strong enough to help her against Raj. So he was strong enough to help her with these men.

She looked at them and she thought maybe she was wrong.
